Music Monday for Moms (Week 3)

“…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother..” (Proverbs 18:24)

Friendship is an amazing gift of life. I don’t think there is anything quite like being able to let your guard down and really share your heart. This is a tremendous and wonderful thing.

As amazing as friendship is though-no friend, no matter how perfect it may seem, will ever fulfill us completely or ever not cause some level of disappointment. After all, we are all human.

I don’t know about you-but I have found this pattern in myself of getting disappointed by people. As an idealist and achiever, I tend to have very high expectations of myself and the people around me-particularly the people in my life I am the closest too. Letting go of the expectation that others will always respond or act in the way you think they would/should is setting yourself up for lots of disappointment, loneliness, and self-pity. This is not a place you want to be and live.

The fact is friends, sisters, brothers, husbands, children-they don’t always respond or act how we think they “should.” They don’t always understand exactly how you are feeling or ask the right questions or say the right thing. They are human.

I’ve spent a portion of my life trying to find my belonging in my relationships with other people, putting my hope in their views of me and in how we are doing. Alas. I’m so thankful for God’s grace and patience in teaching me, over and over again, that people are never where we can find our belonging. They will disappoint us and let us down. Just as I do to others.

There is one Friend, who will not let us down. This Friend does understand us. He knows us better than anyone else. He knows exactly what we need, even when we don’t. And not only that, He loves us. Unconditionally. Even when we act the opposite of how we should- when we act as enemies towards Him. Our Lord-He is closer than a brother.

We can always call on Him. Always. He promises to hear us and to be close to us.

May you remember this Friend, Mama. Run to Him instead of the people, the other ones who we so often expect to carry our burden for us. Go to Him.

“Closer Than A Brother” by Josh Garrels

Fell on dark days, scared to lose
I cry for you
In Your arms, Lord, carry me through
I won’t go without You
O Lord, You’re closer than a brother
A friend that I can fall on
And O God of my salvation
Carried all my burdens on the cross
Greater love has no man
Than to die for his friend

When I was Your enemy
Lord, You came and died for me
O Lord, You’re closer than a brother
A friend that I can fall on
And O God of my salvation
Carried all my burdens
And oh, You’re closer than a brother
A friend that I can fall on
O God of my salvation
Carried all my burdens on the cross
